"definition": "Exchange-coupled composite media combine magnetically hard and soft regions within a recording grain so that exchange coupling can assist reversal of the hard region.",
"note": "Hard and soft refer to magnetic switching, not mechanical hardness. Coupling within a grain is distinct from coupling between neighboring grains. A discretized single-grain study found reversal beginning in the soft region and progressing through the interface; the required coupling depended on the hard region's anisotropy [kapoor-ecc-2006].\n\nExchange-spring terminology overlaps with ECC, but designs differ in interface coupling and anisotropy profile. Graded media vary anisotropy through the grain; quoted gains require a defined comparator and field protocol [suess-exchange-2008].\n\nFast pulses and low damping can enable precessional reversal below the quasi-static switching field in the modeled bilayers. Suess et al. warn that changed angular sensitivity can compromise resistance to adjacent-track erasure. Static switching-field reduction alone is therefore insufficient to qualify a recording design. This is a model-dependent design tradeoff, not a measured drive error rate. [suess-exchange-2008]\n\nA graded-grain rare-event simulation compared same-geometry grains, using a soft single-phase grain matched in coercive field, and a hard single-phase grain with a similar energy barrier but higher coercivity. The controls test different tradeoffs. Absolute escape rates depended on spatial discretization; calculated retention times are not measured disk lifetimes [vogler-graded-2014]. ECC media here does not mean error-correcting codes.",
