In 87 days of NetApp RAID data, a disk was 2x slower than its peers in 0.22% of drive hours, but a RAID group had a slow drive in 1.54% of hours

NetApp field data (Hao et al., FAST 2016): disks and SSDs were 2x slower than their RAID group median for 0.22% and 0.58% of drive hours, but groups had a slow drive for 1.54% and 2.23% of hours. Dean and Barroso (CACM 2013) give the fan-out arithmetic; Gunawi et al. (FAST 2018) and Lu et al. (FAST 2023) are cross-checks from other fleets.

Method

The figures are copied from the USENIX PDFs of Hao et al. (FAST 2016), Gunawi et al. (FAST 2018), and Lu et al. (FAST 2023), and from the author PDF of Dean and Barroso (Communications of the ACM, February 2013); no chart was read. Hao et al. compare each drive's hourly average latency to the median of its RAID group and call an hour slow when the ratio is at least 2; a tail hour is a RAID hour with at least one slow drive. Rows marked derived by us are our division of printed counts or our recomputation of the printed formula 1 minus (1 minus p) to the power n. The four sources come from different organizations and fleets: NetApp customers, Google, a set of operator reports, and Alibaba. Hao et al. and Gunawi et al. share an author, so they are not fully independent of each other. Single printed value, or the upper end of a range.
unit (string)
Unit of the value columns: drives, drive hours, percent, milliseconds, times, reports.
