Rock Ridge
Rock Ridge extends ISO 9660 with POSIX-style file information such as alternative names, permissions, ownership and symbolic links.
The extensions use System Use fields and the System Use Sharing Protocol. In Linux v6.18, PX records carry mode, link-count and owner/group fields, NM records carry alternative names, and SL records describe symbolic links. These describe filesystem objects rather than a different optical recording layer. [1]
A reader that ignores Rock Ridge can still expose the underlying ISO 9660 view without those extensions. Linux documents norock and permission overrides. Confirm which view was extracted before treating a successful copy as preservation of names, links and access metadata. [2] [3]
