Thermal flying-height control (TFC)
Thermal flying-height control uses an embedded heater to adjust HDD head-disk clearance through local thermal protrusion.
Heating changes the shape near the read/write element; gas-bearing response also affects the resulting clearance [1]. It is a spacing-control mechanism, not SSD thermal throttling. Research touchdown procedures are not instructions to stress a drive carrying valuable data.
