IOPS, bandwidth, queue depth and latency: a worked table from Little's law
How IOPS, bandwidth, queue depth and mean latency relate, as a worked table of 100 rows: four block sizes (4 KiB to 1 MiB), queue depths of 1 to 128 and mean latencies of 100 microseconds to 10 milliseconds. The rules are IOPS = queue depth / mean latency (Little's law) and bandwidth = IOPS x block size, in decimal MB/s and in MiB/s as fio prints them. Pure arithmetic, no measurement. For example, queue depth 1 at 100 microseconds is 10,000 IOPS and 40.96 MB/s at 4 KiB, and queue depth 32 at 1 millisecond is 32,000 IOPS.

Scope: a conversion table, not a benchmark. It lists no device and no result. Little’s law says the mean number of items in a system equals the arrival rate times the mean time an item spends there, L = λW. For storage I/O, L is the queue depth (the I/Os in flight, fio’s iodepth), λ is IOPS and W is the mean latency of one I/O. That gives:
IOPS = queue depth ÷ mean latency (seconds)queue depth = IOPS × mean latency (seconds)bandwidth = IOPS × block size, in MB/s (106 bytes) and in MiB/s (220 bytes)
The table is a grid of 4 block sizes (4,096, 16,384, 131,072, 1,048,576 bytes), 5 queue depths (1, 4, 16, 32, 128) and 5 mean latencies (0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10 ms): 100 rows. The build recomputes every cell, checks that IOPS times latency returns the queue depth, and fails on a mismatch.
Conventions from the documentation
- fio’s
iodepthis the number of I/O units kept in flight against the file, default 1. The documentation says raising it above 1 does not affect synchronous engines, and an async engine can be limited by the operating system so the depth reached is lower. For example, libaio withoutdirect=1is not asynchronous on Linux. fio prints the depth distribution to check this. bsis in bytes, default 4096. With the defaultkb_base=1024, 4k means 4096, not 4000. That is why the block sizes here are powers of two.- fio prints bandwidth in both units side by side. Its documentation shows
bw = 2383.3 kB/s (2327.4 KiB/s), one rate in two units: 2383.3 × 1000 ÷ 1024 = 2327.4. This table gives both, as MB/s and MiB/s.
Worked examples
- Queue depth 1 at a mean latency of 100 µs is 10,000 IOPS, which at 4 KiB is 40.96 MB/s (39.06 MiB/s). Raising the queue depth to 32 at 1 ms mean latency gives 32,000 IOPS and 131.07 MB/s.
- With 128 KiB blocks, queue depth 16 and 1 ms: 16,000 IOPS and 2097.15 MB/s (2000.00 MiB/s). With 1 MiB blocks, queue depth 4 and 5 ms: 800 IOPS and 838.86 MB/s.
- The other direction, with the example in the Wikipedia article: a mean of 10 jobs in the system and a throughput of 50 per second give a mean response time of 10 ÷ 50 = 0.2 s. For storage, a mean queue depth of 16 at 32,000 IOPS means a mean latency of 16 ÷ 32,000 = 0.5 ms.
Chart
Limits
- Little’s law relates averages in a stable system. Mean latency hides the spread: a drive can have a low mean and a long tail, and the table says nothing about percentiles.
- Latency is not independent of queue depth. On a real device the latency of one I/O usually rises as more are in flight, so a cell is a consistency check on three numbers, not a prediction that raising queue depth gives that many more IOPS.
- Many cells are above what any one device or link can do, such as 1 MiB blocks at 128 outstanding I/Os and 100 µs. The table does not know the device limits. See the interface payload ceilings dataset for link limits.
- W must be measured the same way as L. If latency is taken at the device and the queue depth at the application, the two will not satisfy the equation.
