Fuzzy checkpoint

A fuzzy checkpoint records recovery information while transaction processing continues, rather than freezing all activity into one instantaneous database image.

In ARIES, the checkpoint records transaction and dirty-page information without forcing dirty pages to storage. Recovery may need older log records. This is neither a backup nor permission to delete every pre-checkpoint log record.
