Logical block provisioning status

Logical block provisioning status describes the mapping state reported for an extent of SCSI logical block addresses.

The reviewed sg3_utils decoder distinguishes 0 (mapped or unknown), 1 (deallocated), 2 (anchored), 3 (mapped) and 4 (unknown). Code 0 is not definitive evidence of mapping, and nonzero is not a synonym for deallocated. [1]

Keep the reported extent, report type and status together. This is a logical-unit observation, not a filesystem free-space count or a backend capacity measurement.

Limitations

  • Provisioning status and readback data answer different questions; interpreting one as the other loses information. [2]

Sources & caveats
  • Status codes follow the pinned decoder; they are not a claim that every target supports every report type.
