Serial Management Protocol
The SAS protocol for management exchanges such as discovering and configuring expander topology.
SMP is a separate member of the SAS protocol layer from SSP and STP. Its management role includes obtaining information about the SAS domain and configuring connected topology. [1] [2]
An SMP request/response exchange is not a block read or write. PHY-related management functions can report link information or control PHY operation; their results must be interpreted as management evidence rather than proof that stored user data is intact. [3]
