Transition jitter

Transition jitter is variation in the positions of recorded magnetization reversals relative to their intended or estimated locations.

The reference position and estimator must be stated [1]. A standard deviation of readback zero crossings need not equal a boundary statistic extracted from a simulated magnetic footprint. Nor is an average of per-track standard deviations generally the pooled standard deviation. Report the recording geometry and sampling procedure alongside nanometers; jitter alone is neither host I/O latency nor a complete-drive error rate.
