Seagate calculates its annualized value from lifetime host reads plus writes and lifetime power-on hours; WD also specifies transfers in both directions and the powered-on denominator. Check the actual model manual. [1] [2] It is not a cumulative write-endurance budget or a failure probability. A short-window diagnostic must use matching differences for all counters, with explicit units and no reset or replacement. These accounting examples do not establish a safe scrub frequency. [3]
